Berlin is Germany’s capital and its largest city. It is part of Germany’s sixteen states and has a population of over 3.4 million residents. Records dating back to the 13th century, Berlin has been the successive capital of the Kingdom of Prussia; the German Empire; the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich. The city had been divided by the historic Berlin Wall to East and West Berlin after World War II, where East Berlin was East Germany’s capital, and West Berlin was the territory of West Germany by default. After the German reunification in 1990, Berlin was again became Germany’s capital.
Apart from the historical associations, Berlin also houses world-famous universities, research institutes, museums, sporting events, orchestras and personalities. Visitors also flock to the city for its thrumming nightlife, its cafes, the clubs, the bars, its street arts and a host of historical sites and structures.
If you’re planning a trip to Berlin, here are some places you might want to visit:
The Brandenburg Gate- In the historic district of Mitte, along Pariser Platz, lies the historic gate that once divided Berlin into East and West, and now stands for its reunification. The Brandenburg Gate was designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans and was meant to resemble the Acropolis in Athens.
The Bebelplatz- the Bebelplatz, formerly called the Opernplatz was made infamous when Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels used the square to burn 20,000 books by “immoral authors” whom the Nazi disapproved. The list included authors such as Sigmund Freud, Thomas and Heinrich Mann, Arnold Zweig, and Kurt Tucholsky. The monument is located underground and can be viewed through a piece of plexiglass which gives a view of a large, white room filled with empty white bookshelves, symbolic of the ideas that were lost during the fire.
The Pergamon Museum- the Pergamon Museum boasts of having three grand collections housed within its walls: the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of Near Eastern Antiquities and the Museum of Islamic Art.
