Rivier University to recognize nurse leader, educator and safety advocate at 80th Commencement on May 9th

Karen A. Daley, Ph.D. will address graduates of the Class of 2015 at Rivier University’s Commencement ceremony on May 9, 2015 and will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters in recognition of her eminent career as a nurse, public health advocate, and educator.

Serving as a front-line caregiver and senior staff nurse at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for 25 years and advancing to leadership roles, including President of the American Nurses Association in which she represented the interest of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses, Dr. Daley has had a far-reaching impact on the nursing profession and the field of healthcare. She has been recognized with numerous awards for her outstanding leadership and excellence in practice. In addition to many notable honors, she was named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in 2011 and one of the “Top 25 Women in Healthcare” in 2013 by Modern Healthcare.

After a tragic accident in which she was co-infected with HIV and Hepatitis C by a workplace needlestick injury, Dr. Daley’s career transitioned from practice to prevention. The University is a leader in the education of nursing and healthcare professionals, offering degrees from the associate to the doctoral level. Rivier has prepared the largest number of nurses in the state of New Hampshire and recently launched bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public health. She stresses the importance of a team-based approach to patient-centered healthcare, noting the unique qualifications of nurses to lead care coordination teams. In Job Interview Training with Molly Porter, users build their skills and confidence in role-play interviews with a simulated HR Manager named Molly Porter. Molly is portrayed in video by a trained actress for greater realism than a 3D avatar would provide. She has a repertoire of more than a thousand standard interview questions and follow-ups to ask, giving users experience fielding some of the questions they’re certain to hear in the real world. If users personalize their experience by filling out an optional mock job application, Molly’s questions will change to reflect some of the specific information users have shared about themselves. Molly has four distinct personalities that vary from play to play, and an advanced emotional model that makes her more open and encouraging over time if users make strong choices and more distant or disinterested if users make a string of mistakes. An on-screen coach captures teachable moments every step of the way. Researchers at Northwestern University have found that using Job Interview Training significantly increased the interview skills and self-confidence of users from a range of populations, including users with disabilities like Autism. Follow-up research found that Job Interview Training users were nine times more likely to have a job offer within six months than their peers without the training.

School Grants For Women

If you are a woman who is headed to college, you may be able to find help to pay for your education based on your gender alone. You are considered a minority, and as a result, there are specific grants available for you. You just need to know where to look and be a little aggressive when pursuing potential opportunities.

The first step towards getting any grant, no matter whether it is specifically for female students or not, is to file the FAFSA. This determines your level of financial need, and many non-government grants will want to know how needy you are before offering you the money. Get this filed as early as possible to open the door to the most grant opportunities.

Women are vastly underrepresented in many fields, particularly science, math, and medicine. For this reason, many schools offer grants to encourage women students to enter these fields. If you are interested in studying a scientific field, talk to the department head at your chosen school. You may find that there is a grant available that you had no idea existed. Remember, it never hurts to ask!

Always talk to your financial aid office at the school you are going to attend. It’s their job to know what scholarships are available, and they may be able to point you towards some that are specifically designated for female students. Once you start filling out applications, continue with the process. Always follow up, asking if there is anything else you need to do to get your grant application in and noticed.

Whether a grant is gender-specific or not, you need to apply early. Grant money will be awarded as applications come in. If you wait until you are close to the start of the school year, the money may all be gone. Once a school has spent all of the money it is receiving, no more will be made available, no matter how well qualified an applicant may be.

Remember to think outside of the box. Is there a local beauty pageant you qualify to participate in? Consider signing up, and you might earn some scholarship or grant money for school. Is there a local women’s society or charity that caters to females? Volunteer your time, and you may get noticed by a local business that has a grant to offer. Apply for any opportunity, scholarship, or grant that you find, and you will get as much money as possible to pay for your education.

As a public school, all students will be required to take the same state assessments as traditional school students. TECCA’s first day of school is August 27th.

The school is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of Massachusetts residents, while its curriculum and other services are contracted through Connections Education, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable online learning, which is accredited by AdvancED.

All TECCA students will participate in the nationally accredited Connections Academy program that combines high-quality resources from leading publishers with cutting-edge, yet easy-to-use, technology tools and hands-on materials. Learning from home, students will work closely with licensed Massachusetts teachers using detailed daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet individual student needs. A parent, or another adult “Learning Coach,” monitors progress in the home.
