Out and About in Coventry

No visit to Coventry is complete without going to see Coventry’s famous cathedral. St Michael’s Cathedral is Coventry’s best known landmark. Built in the fourteenth century, the original cathedral was extensively damaged by bombing during the Second World War. Consequently, it is one of Britain’s most modern cathedrals although the original 303 foot high tower still stands and is therefore one of the tallest Cathedral spires in England.

Also well worth a visit for those interested in historic Coventry is the Vulcan bomber along with 30 other types of aircraft. There is also a dedicated exhibition honouring Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine. Set up by a group of dedicated aircraft enthusiasts, the museum has grown and grown. Now situated near Coventry Airport, it is rapidly increasing its number of exhibits so there will always be something new to see on a return visit.

Coventry is the birthplace of the British car and motorbike industries so while you are staying in a Coventry hotel, go and investigate the Coventry Transport Museum. Here you will find one of the largest collections of road and transport exhibits in the world. The motorbike collection has motorised tricycles and also the modern Triumph, with many from the times in between. There are examples of motorbikes from other countries, as well as push bikes such as the penny farthing. The car section is fascinating with such exhibits as Queen Mary’s Daimler from 1935 and the land speed record breaking Thrust. There is also a complete section dedicated to commercial vehicles.

For a child-friendly experience while staying at your Coventry hotel, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum provides an interactive experience which is fun for all the family. The museum covers a very wide range of topics, which include archaeology, natural history, toys and the Second World War, to name but a few. Whatever your interest, it is likely that the Herbert will have something of interest to you. Of particular interest is the ‘Walking with Beasts’ exhibition. Based on the BBC television series of the same name, ‘Walking with Beasts’ uses animation, touch-screen computers and blue screen technology to bring the beasts to life and provide a unique and fascinating museum experience.

Afterwards, for a little retail therapy, try one of Coventry’s shopping malls. West Orchards Shopping Centre is near the heart of Coventry and has all the regular high street stores plus a dedicated food court. The Lower Precinct Shopping Centre is the place to go for fashion and it also has many independent cafes to eat in after a hard day of sightseeing. Or you could wander around in Broadgate and Cathedral Lanes and meet up under the statue of Lady Godiva, one of Coventry’s most famous residents.

Using your hotel in Coventry as a base, there is a multitude of places to visit and things to do in and around Coventry.
